Abstract
The number of Black farmers has decreased tremendously since 1920. Black farmers in the United States have decreased 98 percent from 1920 to 1997 compared to a 66 percent decrease in White farmers. Existing sociological research on Black farmers is limited. At this time, most studies look at Black farmers and landloss. Qualitative interviews were conducted with seven Black farmers in Louisiana. This study examines how farmers talk about family, community, and farm loan programs. Specifically, this study explores from a critical race perspective the voice of Black farmers to understand their unique experiences.
