Spending time with Rabbi Nissan Antine is like meeting an old friend you haven't seen in a while. He's thrilled to see you and can't wait to tell you everything.
The 33-year-old associate rabbi at Beth Sholom Congregation and Talmud Torah will become that synagogue's senior rabbi in July 2013 when Rabbi Joel Tessler makes aliyah. Since 2006, Antine has risen from yeshiva graduate to assistant rabbi to his current associate rabbi position at the Potomac synagogue, which has a membership of more than 400 families.
His rapid rise has been noticed by Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School in New York, from which he graduated in 2006, when he was named Alumnus of the Year. This Sunday, the synagogue will honor him with a rabbinic and medical bioethics panel followed by a buffet dinner.
Antine praised his rabbinical school, calling it "an amazing place. It wasn't only about the learning and preparing to be a rabbi. I became who I am as a person by being there."
