Outlook for 2014-18
The government will maintain its conciliatory stance towards its opponents, including the pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who will continue to play a prominent role in parliament.
Although it is possible that the constitution will be changed to allow Aung San Suu Kyi to become president after the 2015 general election, major reforms to remove the military's influence in the legislature are unlikely.
