Former Journalist among Crowded Field in Council Race
She missed being elected to the D.C. Council by just a small margin in a special election last year won by Democrat Anita Bonds.
Now, with two seats open in a crowded candidate field for D.C. at-large council, former jour- nalist Elissa Silverman believes she has enough support to nail down an election night victory on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
"I feel good about the elec- tion," said Silverman, 41, an in- dependent who once worked as a reporter for the City Paper and The Washington Post.
After losing to Bonds by fewer than 3,000 votes in 2013, Silver- man has already made plans for a victory and a transition.
"I think the biggest thing council does every year is pass the budget," she said.
"When I get to the Wilson Building on January 2 the bud- get will be a big focus of mine. Getting a handle on where we are and making sure we under- stand how we are spending our money, how we are spending our homeless dollars and, moving forward, how we can spend our dollars even better."
Silverman, who lives in Northeast, said she'll have a new staff and the city will have a new mayor. She said work will begin in earnest on the next budget in which she plans to set higher standards for oversight and...
