André singer's hbo-backed documentary recounts the making of German Concentration Camps Factual Survey, which Sidney Bernstein produced for the Allies' Psychological Warfare Division with the goal of "re-educating" the Germans complicit in the Holocaust and other Nazi slaughters.
Bernstein, the British Ministry of Information's film adviser, saw for himself the carnage and squalor at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northern Germany a week after British soldiers had liberated it in April 1945. Having already seen footage of the liberated Ohrdruf camp and Hadamar euthanasia center, also in Germany, he was urged to compile "a systematic record" of Belsen, Madjanek, AuschwitzBirkenau, Dachau, Buchenwald, five other camps, and four atrocity sites.
