It is graduation season once again. Each year hundreds of students graduate from high schools and colleges across the country. In May I attended the Nunavut Sivuniksavut 2004 graduation and in June, my "baby brother" graduated from high school. Ironically, Lawrence started kindergarten during my last year of university.
Starting kindergarten is the first step in a series of terrifying rites of passage young people experience. The school is enormous. Suddenly, after being one of the "big kids" at daycare, you're the smallest, and the older students seem so much smarter - and scary too, in some cases. It seems like you'll never catch up, but you do, and you follow classmates through the years, feeling quite at home, until you've reached the second rite...
