Among big banks serving southwest Idaho, Seattle-based Washington Mutual seems unique in that it is growing the old-fashioned way - by constructing standalone branch offices.
Since the mid-1990s, most construction of new bank branches in the Boise area has been by small or mid-sized institutions.
The big banks also have done some construction, but most has involved branch replacement or remodeling. Some large banks closed branches - some of which subsequently were occupied by smaller banks or other businesses.
Washington Mutual has started building a branch of 4,500 square feet at 468 Rivershore Lane in Eagle and expects to open it in July, Idaho Regional Manager Jim Linker said in an interview. A staff of eight is planned.
