To escape exorbitant real estate prices in Southern California, many families packed up and headed east to Riverside County where they could afford a decent home.
The migration has made Riverside County the fastest growing county in all of California, with growth projections exceeding more than twice the entire state's rate of growth.
During the past decade, the area's population has swelled by 55%. Total retail sales in the trade area have jumped 71.5% in just the past five years. Not surprisingly, shopping centers are being built to serve the bustling demand.
A major project is the joint development between Chicago-based Homart Development Co., and Orange, Calif.-based Fritz Duda Company of the 1 billion-plus-sq.-ft. Moreno Valley Mall at Town Gate. The mall, which will debut in October of 1992, is the first regional mall constructed in Riverside County in 20 years.
The $92 million center will be anchored by Sears, J. C. Penney, May Co., and Harris, a Spanish owned eight-store department store chain. Bullock's will join...
