`It's Part Of Our Heritage': Shaarei Tfiloh's listing on a landmarks. registry may attract new member, and dollars, to an old shul.
Baltimore's 76-year-old Shaarei Tfiloh Synagogue, known by generations of local Jews as "the shul in the park" because of its proximity to Druid Hill Park, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places last month.
The Orthodox congregation, at the corner of Liberty Heights Avenue and Auchentoroly Terrace, is one of only two functioning local synagogues - the other being B'nai israel in East Baltimore - to receive the federal designation for historic buildings, districts and sites.
The register is administer by the National Park Service of the department of the Interior. The listing qualifies properties for rehabilitation loans and grants made available through local agencies, such as the Maryland Historical Trust.
