Dr. Marshall S. Bedine On Crohn's Disease.
An estimated 2 million people suffer from Crohn's disease, or related ulcerative colitis -- chronic intestinal disorders sometimes associated with Ashkenazi Jews. On Sunday, the Maryland chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) will hold its annual bowl-a-rama fund-raiser at the four Fair Lanes bowling centers (Owings Mills, Rolling Road, Timonium and Ritchie). Dr. Marshall S. Bedine, a Lutherville gastroenterologist, discussed Crohn's disease with the BALTIMORE JEWISH TIMES.
J.T. -- What is Crohn's disease?
Dr. Bedine -- It's a disease of the intestinal tract that may involve the colon and the small intestine. Ulcerative colitis involves only the large intestine. General symptoms are abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhea and rectal bleeding. People with these symptoms should see their physician.
