Abstract
After introducing the experts that take part in the dossier, this paper summarily characterizes the linguistic situation of Bulgaria and Romania, the two new Member States of the European Union, both in demographic and political terms, with an additional mention to Ireland, a long-term Member State that has managed to make Irish the 23rd official language of the EU. To conclude, this paper provides some data on the presence of Bulgarian and Romanian citizens in Catalonia and Spain —an increasing presence that might foster the cultural and literary relationship between the two new Member States and the Catalan speaking area.
