It is gratifying that films like The Book of Revelation are still being made. In an era dominated by knowing irony, one has to commend the po-faced and portentous approach that Ana Kokkinos has brought to her adaptation of British writer Rupert Thomson's psychosexual novel. The film centres on pouting dancer/choreographer Daniel, charmlessly played by Tom Long, who is abducted by three black-cowled women who bind him and subject him to various forms of sexual humiliation. It is the implausibility of this scenario that ends up making The Book of Revelation unintentionally camp. Kokkinos apparently intended her film to be a serious study of the effects of sexual violence on a male victim, and envisaged it as part of an august lineage of intellectual cinematic erotica that includes Belle de jour...
