While Admiral Peary was trekking across the ice at the top of the world hoping to be the first to plant a flag at the North Pole, his wife, Josephine Peary, was enjoying the balmy days of late summer on Casco Bay's Eagle Island.
According to legend, Mrs. Peary wasn't too interested when a messenger from the Associated Press tied up at her dock, telegram in hand. She'd heard many false reports about her husband and that Pole. But when a second boat came, with a telegram from the admiral himself, she believed. Reporters began arriving, clamoring for a quote. "What do you have to say now, Mrs. Peary?" they asked.
"I say, 'Come on, boys, let's have a drink!'"
