Two car bombs and two other explosions rocked downtownKarachi yesterday evening, killing at least 67 people and woundingmore than 300, officials reported. The blasts were almost simultaneous. Officials described the blasts as the worst terrorist incident ever staged in Pakistan.
Witnesses and officials said the powerful car bombs blew passersby to bits, spattering blood on buildings across the wide street. Police said about 20 vehicles were destroyed by the explosions and subsequent fires.
The car bombs exploded shortly after 6:30 p.m. in front of two buildings with ground-floor shops and three floors of apartments, police reported. They said a third bomb went off at a bus stop and the fourth on a nearby footpath.
