LAST Wednesday a telephone call to Headingley was rebuffed with the excuse that "Mr Laughton says he is too harassed to take any press calls this morning".
The Leeds coach was not of a mood to answer too many questions after this destruction of his side at Wembley either. Since a darkened room was not available he took refuge in the team bus, perhaps trying to come to terms with an overwhelming sense of emptiness.
His captain, Ellery Hanley, was only marginally less terse. "Look at the scoreboard," he said. "That tells the whole story." Phil Clarke, the Wigan loose forward, disagreed. "It was a much tougher game out there than you might have thought," he said.
That may have been true up to half-time. It was certainly not true after the 44th minute. Ethelred was never more unready than the Leeds defence at that critical moment as Jason Robinson, Wigan's young winger and the eventual Lance Todd Trophy winner, sprinted clear for his second try.
