Abstract (summary)

Results point consistently toward rising ages at marriage in Northern and urban Sudan for both sexes. The observed increase in mean age at marriage for males and females is between 2-3 years between 1973 and 1978/79. Singulate mean age at marriage (SMAM) for females in Northern Sudan rose from 18.6 in 1973 to 21.3 in 1978/79. For males SMAM was 25.5 in 1973 and 27.9 in 1978/79. However, there is no indication that permanent celibacy is on the rise. The simultaneous increase in the mean age at marriage for males and females produced little reduction in the age difference between spouses. We also discover little variation among regional estimates of mean ages at marriage for males, but much variability among the estimates for females.

Analysis of data quality suggests that this rise in age at marriage is genuine and does not reflect improved reporting of ages in more recent periods. Our analysis of the correlates of rising in age at marriage centered around the role of education, urbanization and male out migration. All affect age at first marriage positively. In particular, education greatly influenced age at first marriage for both sexes. This is true despite the persistence of post-nuptial residence and several types of endogamy. The increase in age at marriage can best be described as recent, rapid and pervasive. A final analysis explored the relationship between education of husband and wife. A strong pattern of educational homogamy was uncovered.
