The evolving role of extension in the development of agriculture in Lagos State, Nigeria
A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data on various Extension disseminating methods and the constraints that hinder Extension agents in carrying out their duties in Lagos State, Nigeria.
The investigation briefly described the location of Nigeria in West Africa as well as the vegetational types, climatic conditions, ethnic groups, agricultural products and economical constraints hindering the acceleration of agricultural development in Nigeria. The data were analyzed by SAS computer package.
The purpose and objectives were to investigate problems facing Agriculture in Nigeria. The objectives were formulated as a needs assessment to determine extension disseminating methods, their constraints and suggestions as to how to improve the system in Lagos State.
The review of literature elaborated on various kinds of extension disseminating methods that have been proven to be useful both in undeveloped and developed nations. The review also emphasized various ways of solving Agricultural problems through other means of extension methodology.
The results of the investigation show the individual (visiting), group contact methods (meeting, result and method demonstration) and mass media are methods the Extension agents used in Lagos State to disseminate extension messages.
The most utilized form of Extension disseminating method in Lagos State is individual contact method. This also includes, group contact method like meeting, result and method demonstration. The Extension agents were unanimous that lack of modern disseminating means were the reason that the State Extension organization adopted individual and group contact methods. Differences in cultural, language and ethnic background had no barriers or hinderances to the Extension agents in their duties.
