Abstract (summary)

Vector quantization (VQ) is applied to binary images. In order to effectively apply VQ, the idea of variable vector sizes is introduced. Using variable vector sizes, large vectors, for high compression, can be used in areas of little detail and small vectors, for good fidelity, can be used in detailed areas. Further, to increase fidelity and compression, an adaptive codebook is also used.
