Abstract (summary)

This study is about urban development non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Chile. The results are from a study carried out between 1988 and mid-1990. Its goal is to present the most relevant characteristics of those Chilean NGOs that center the bulk of their activity on urban poverty. In particular, the following themes are addressed: the principal features of their evolution under the military regime; their basic institutional characteristics; their typical sequences of development; the types of projects and activities that they pursue; the networks of relations in which they are embedded; the most common conflicts they undergo; their recurrent ideological articulations; and their potentials and deficiencies in the field of social work and in the design and implementation of social polices. In conclusion, some observations are formulated concerning changes on the part of the NGOs in the context of redemocratization in the country. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
