Abstract (summary)

The purpose of this thesis is to review current writings on ADHD and to consider assessment and treatment for school-aged children aged 12 and under. The thesis focuses specifically on information pertinent to the occupational therapist. Literature reveals that current intervention of choice is medication therapy and favors psychostimulant therapy. Secondary interventions include classroom management behavioral intervention strategies and cognitive behavioral strategies. Chapter 5 discusses how occupational therapy may be able to expand its scope in the treatment of childhood ADHD. Recommendations are made in Chapter 5 that suggest areas for concentration of occupational therapy's attention. Use of the biopsychosocial framework, re-prioritizing interventions, and use of sensory integration (SI) are all discussed. Also, reframing of occupational therapists' functioning is suggested, with a transition from a peripheral to a more central position in the team approach. Occupational therapists are urged to contribute more data to field research. Occupational therapists are also encouraged to develop guidelines whereby practitioners may function more fully as a part of special education and related services. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
