Abstract (summary)

Habermas' work obeys an unwritten law which makes authors refer to each other over time. The development by the interpretative method, on the one hand, of what consensus is and how Gadamer and Habermas are included in it will animate the first part of the dissertation while the second part will attempt, on the other hand, to elucidate the paradox of Tradition, as 'higher idea contradicting and including lower ideas', according to Louis Dumont. By three elements, a right of citizenship, an elected status, a state content: cultural activity, Tradition is differentiated from consensus by the place of relationships between individuals, social environments, eras, schools of thought , languages and distinct national cultures. The comparison of the positions-oppositions of Sartre and Habermas will allow us to understand what hierarchy is as a relation of encompassing its opposite and the statutory opposition, that is to say symmetry. These two methods—interpretative and comparative—support the hypothesis, put forward in this dissertation, that the Habermas consensus is a renewed return to Tradition.
