This dissertation is a composition for an ensemble of 16 vocalists. It is an attempt to create music that, by applying mathematics, computer technology and research in linguistics and phonology, enables a style of text/sound music that challenges and engages members of the audience by placing them in a listening situation where they hear orchestrated vocal sounds as music and as speech. Algorithms implemented in software and custom forms of music notation scoring speech are described for the pursuit of these compositional goals.
