ABC's of Feelings: An early intervention curriculum for teaching emotional knowledge to preschool children
The focus of the present project was to create a bilingual curriculum that teaches feelings to preschool children who are at risk for not developing age appropriate emotional knowledge. The curriculum originally focused on targeting children who may not be on track with age-appropriate emotional development. However, ABC's of Feelings: An Early Intervention Curriculum for Teaching Emotional Knowledge to Preschool Children may be used to teach the basic emotions to all preschool children at a developmentally appropriate level. ABC's of Feelings is based on current research regarding the importance of emotional knowledge, influences of emotional understanding, approaches to teaching emotions, developmental theories, and components of a successful curriculum. This researcher piloted ABC's of Feelings in four Head Start preschools, and it was found to significantly increase emotional knowledge in comparison to children who did not receive an emotional curriculum. Facilitator, teacher, and parent evaluations were collected and analyzed after the study, and suggestions were incorporated into a final version of the curriculum. Overall, ABC's of Feelings was found to be a practical and enjoyable bilingual curriculum that significantly increased a child's emotional knowledge.
