The pressure to be thin: The relationship between the media's portrayal of the “ideal” body and the effect that it can have on the eating habits and body satisfaction of young adults
Research has suggested a link between the media's promotion of the thin ideal-body dissatisfaction, and disordered eating. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the media's portrayal of the "ideal" body type and the effect that it can have on the eating habits and body satisfaction of young adults. Thirty college students participated in this study.
The results of this study indicated that regular magazine consumption has a negative impact on the eating habits of young adults and their perceptions of the media. However, there were no significant gender differences in eating habits, body satisfaction, and perceptions of the media.
