CLARKSBURG - Jay Wolfe's campaign manager sleeps in a trailer adjacent to Wolfe's Harrison County insurance office, which doubles as his campaign headquarters.
Wolfe's opponent in the state's U.S. Senate race, Democratic incumbent Sen. Jay Rockefeller, has raised more than 29 times as much campaign money as Wolfe has.
But the Republican nominee and former state senator hopes his thrifty, grass-roots strategy will be enough to unseat Rockefeller Tuesday.
"I knew that if I wanted to beat [Rockefeller], it was going to take a grass-roots effort," Wolfe said. "We knew from the beginning that we couldn't outspend him, so we tried to out-organize him."
As of mid-October, Wolfe had raised $100,536 to Rockefeller's $2.9 million, according campaign finance reports. Wolfe had spent $101,532; Rockefeller, $1.5 million.
