Despite numbers reflecting a giant lead for Sen. Jay Rockefeller, challenger Jay Wolfe says he thinks he's close and that he can win.
The West Virginia Poll, a survey of 400 likely voters in the state released today, shows that 72 percent would vote for Rockefeller, D-W.Va. Seventeen percent said they would vote for Republican Wolfe, and 12 percent were still undecided.
Wolfe thinks the race is much closer.
"I haven't put 80,000 miles on my vehicle in the last year thinking this is something fun to do," Wolfe said. "We plan on beating him next week."
Wolfe should be used to being the underdog.
In 1988, he ran against Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va. That year, he received about 35 percent of the vote.
