Sue Thurman, Widow of Noted Theologian Howard Thurman.
Sue Bailey Thurman, who devoted her life to interracial, intercultural and international understanding, died peacefully in her sleep on Christmas Day at the San Francisco Zen Buddhist Hospice Center. She was 93.
Mrs. Thurman, who had lived in the city for the past 32 years, was born in Pine Bluff, Ark., the daughter of a minister and a social worker.
Thurman earned undergraduate degrees in music and architecture at Oberlin College in Ohio.
Thurman founded, and became the first editor of, the Afro-American Women's Journal, the first published organ of the National Council of Negro Women. She also created the group's archive and museum departments.
Married to Howard Thurman, a noted theologian and religious pioneer, Thurman was a lifelong source of support and inspiration to her husband, who died in 1981.
