The making of an African-American quilt

She's a delightful sister/elder from South Carolina who has worked hard all of her life, but has preserved the softer side of herself in her art -- those unmistakably Elizabeth Talford Scott quilts.
Ms. Scott tires easily of all the "fuss" about her work, a part of which, Eyewinkers, Tumbleturds and Candlebugs: The Art of Elizabeth Talford Scott, is on display at the Maryland Institute of Art through March 1.
She smiles slightly, and talks easily about the early days, when her family gleaned swatches and imperfect pieces of fabric from the factories in South Carolina and parlayed them into beautiful pieces of art.
"It was work back then, and they'd get you if you missed a stitch or made the stitches too long."
