Candidates for `98 D.C. elections have strong stands on issues

Candidates for the D.C. General Election on Nov. 3 were outspoken in their interviews with the Washington AFRO-American editorial staff.
ANTHONY WILLIAMS, Democratic Mayoral candidate, said he stands for customer service in the District government, accountability and performance.
He said that he believes that people should run the government and there should be a performance contract in place that grades the worker. He also called for a thirdparty review system to be put in place to evaluate performance and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council. He wants to incorporate testers and customer service reports in his system to be able to evaluate D.C. government workers and the system of operations.
Mr. Williams would like to see over $100 million invested in economical development in D.C. neighborhoods to increase the participation of minority businesses and to ensure the development of a new baseball stadium in D.C. He would also like to see Home Rule reinstated and full power returned to the District.
On sanitation, Mr. Williams stand is "Clean it or Lien it". He would like to see a two- day neighborhood strategy focused on removing graffiti from the walls and abandoned properties and to clean up commercial areas.
He said that his support comes from all over the city and that 70 percent of his funds came from small contributions; he wants to improve the educational system by putting resources into the classroom such as books, supplies and teachers to support students and parents in the learning process and that he supports UDC as a viable four- year institution. He would like to implement a commission on post secondary education to maintain the goals and objectives of higher education.
On the subject of amnesty for the growing numbers of illegal aliens in the District to have an opportunity to hope to become law abiding, productive, employable, taxable citizens, Williams said, "As Mayor, I would support all efforts to obtain legal status from the federal government to help individuals and families from other countries who are here illegally.
