The House of Representatives voted last week to restore a measure of fairness to America's working poor by approving a boost in the federal minimum wage. The bill which passed represented a compromise with some House Republicans on the minimum wage issue. The minimum wage would be raised from the current $3.35 an hour to $3.85 in October 1, 1989; $4.25 in October 1, 1990; and $4.55 in October 1, 1991.
In addition to the wage hikes, which are essentially the same as those in the original bill, a compromise was worked out on the so-called "training wage".
