Artist R.M. Fischer was downtown Monday for the dedication of his modernistic sculpture, "Skygate," at 5th and Wabasha Sts. on the edge of Ecolab Plaza.
A veteran of public art installations around the country, Fischer is based in New York City.
Entertainment at the dedication ceremony - amid dozens of thank- yous to all the groups that helped pay the sculpture's $355,000 cost - was by Theater Mu, the Minnesota Youth Symphony and Circus of the Star.
An interesting aspect of the 51-foot sculpture: It looks different, depending on where you're standing, because each building in the background provides a different perspective. The sculpture is mirrored in the glass Ecolab building, blends into the Lawson building and seems very futuristic against the historic St. Paul Building's red stone.

Norwest Bank signs will start coming down this month, to be replaced by Wells Fargo signs, now that Norwest has adopted the well- known name of the San Francisco-based bank it acquired.
The big question in St. Paul, though, is: Will there also be a name change at Norwest Center, the retail and office complex at 5th and Cedar Sts.? The answer: No decision has been made yet.
