Abstract (summary)

The Seventeenth Century Welsh Puritan, Vavasor Powell (1717-1670) has, when considered at all, been either excluded from the Puritan worthies of that era or relegated to the radical fringes of Welsh anarchism. This dissertation aims to examine the life, ministry and works of Vavasor Powell, the theological core of the Westminster Assembly which sent him out to establish churches in Wales according to their confessions, and to observe, through historical analysis of primary sources in both Westminster and the life of Powell and his contemporaries, whether Powell (and thus the more radical, Welsh, left wing movement of Seventeenth Century British Puritanism) should be considered one of the greater lights of that era.
