Abstract (summary)

The Maronite Church is one of the twenty-one sui iuris Churches that form what is sometimes called the Eastern Catholic Church. It has its particularities, which distinguish it from the Latin Church and from the other Eastern Churches: hierarchy, discipline and liturgical rite are specific to it. His story has not always been easy. She lived through moments of trial, which were decisive in the dispersion of her faithful to the four corners of the world.

The Maronites of Canada come from different countries of the Middle East: from Egypt, Syria, and especially from Lebanon, their ancestral land. It is believed that the presence of Maronites in Canada became sociologically significant by the end of the 19th century.

Located in a West very far from the homeland of Saint Maron, both from the point of view of geography and culture, how has this eparchy preserved its identity outside its natural environment? How does it differ from other particular churches? Does his hierarchy differ, in the exercise of his power, from the other eparchial bishops of the patriarchate, and in particular from those who are in Lebanon? Is there hope for continuity – in fidelity to essential values – outside the Orient? How will its faithful remain attached to their particular Church, canonically, spiritually and in all conscience? These are the questions that will be addressed in the following pages.

Such research necessarily raises the question of the future of the Maronite Church in Canada. It is very important to know if his followers are still interested in getting involved; likewise, it is essential that it retain its eastern identity for future generations. This Church faces a very great challenge. Is it aware of its mission and the challenges it will face in the future? In the absence of a definitive answer, we will find here several benchmarks and useful lines of thought.
