In late August, trendy menswear shop Onassis opened a 1,500-square-foot shop at 30 Rockefeller Center, replacing a decades-old souvenir store that sold New York-themed snow globes and figurines. The launch was on the heels of bohemian-apparel chain Free People, which opened at 10 W. 49th St. in March. Designer Michael Kors will open a store nearby in September.
Landlord Tishman Speyer is cleaning house at Rockefeller Center, an area that is increasingly bridging the gap between the fast-fashion tenants of Fifth Avenue in the mid-40s and the luxury players on the strip above 49th Street. Canadian fashion house Aritzia and even Blue Bottle, the Oakland, Calif-based coffee chain with an outpost in edgy Williamsburg, Brooklyn, have signed on.
