Yorkshire RAF base to be axed under defence cuts

An RAF base near Selby is to shut in a bid to save costs.

RAF Church Fenton is to close by the end of the year, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed, as part of the Government's Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR).

Armed Forces Minister Andrew Robathan said in a statement to Parliament yesterday the North Yorkshire base, which remains the home of the Yorkshire Universities Air Squadron, was no longer needed.
