Abstract This essay explores the negation system in Thomass Tristan; specically, which grammatical and lexical processes Thomas uses to realize the idea of negation. The verses of the romance are inlaid with negative phrases that exploit parallelism and antithesis to broaden their signicance. The extensive use of negative expressionsoften employed in the most emphatic variant formis strictly linked to the rhetorical component of the text, and becomes denser in the interior monologues and comments of the author; it is much less frequent in the narrative segments or in dialogue. The extraordinarily frequent use of exclusiverestrictive negation phrases is almost a linguistic tic in Thomass writing. The nature of these phrases allows him to better illustrate the repercussions that each episode has in the interiority of the characters; they follow the fracturing of a sentiment in thousands of different facets and reect the instability of passion.

Introduzione
