Harendra Singh, a 56-year-old restaurant owner and Syosset resident, has been indicted for allegedly committing bribery to obtain loan guarantees from the Town of Oyster Bay, fraudulently obtaining $900,000 in disaster relief funds and failing to report $17 million in revenue.
Singh was arrested this morning and pleaded not guilty to the charges in an arraignment before United States Magistrate Judge A. Kathleen Tomlinson at the United States Courthouse at 100 Federal Plaza, in Central Islip.
He is the owner of H.R Singletons in Bethpage as well as several other restaurants and the operator of Town of Oyster Bay concessions at Tobay Beach and the Woodlands at a Town of Oyster Bay golf course,
The 13-count indictment charges that Singh, more commonly known as H. Singh, paid bribes and kickbacks to an unnamed Town of Oyster Bay official to obtain guarantees from the town for $20 million in loans.
It also alleges he under-reported more than $17 million in sales and wages and submitted false documents to obtain more than $900,000 in disaster relief funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The indictment says that Singh, who owns about 30 businesses, bases his operations in offices at H.R. Singletons, his restaurant at 150 Hicksville Road in Bethpage.
Kelly Currie, acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, accused Singh of "using bribes and kickbacks to tilt the playing field in the Town of Oyster Bay."
