Graphic novelist Mariko Tamaki become the first female to receive the Lynd Ward Prize from the Penn State Center for the Book on Thursday.
In front of many Penn State students and faculty, Mariko Tamaki accepted the award on behalf of herself and her cousin, Jillian Tamaki , who could not make it to Penn State for the acceptance.
In addition to becoming the first women to be honored with this prize, Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki also became the first graphic novelists to be selected as Caldecott medal recipients.
