The most poignant comments at the Remembrance, Resilience and Hope gathering in support of Israel on Sunday may have come from someone who was not even in the Congregation Mishkan Tefila sanctuary.
Micha Lakin told about 600 people in attendance, via video from Israel, of the efforts of his father, Richard, a former Newton resident, to promote co-existence, only to be shot in the head and stabbed in the chest Oct. 14 on a Jerusalem bus. He died Oct. 27.
The event featured a range of speakers including Congressmen Seth Moulton and Joe Kennedy III as well as Miri Eisen, a former colonel in the Israel Defense Forces.
Lakin said in the video, made two days after his father passed away, that he was "all about people (to) teach them to be kind and care for each other."
Lakin, who also was instrumental in founding the Solomon Schecter Day School before making aliyah three decades ago, "abhorred hatred," said his son. "He fought against it whenever he could."
