Abstract
The Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has been mandated to collect testimonies from survivors of the Indian Residential Schools system (IRS). An Indigenous feminist evaluation of the underlying epistemological commitments assumed by the TRC emphasizes how the emotional expressions of Indigenous women have been delegitimized and pathologized. Dian Million's felt theory articulates the internal tension within the TRC, which invites personal testimonies of abuse within the IRS, on the one hand, and pathologizes and depoliticizes these subjective and emotionally-charged accounts, on the other. The emphasis on the felt experience of colonialism, however, has the potential to provoke a settler audience to hear experiential and subjective testimonies in unsettling ways that disrupt a sustained ignorance of the colonial past and present. That is to say, felt knowledge can incite settlers to bear ethical witness and learn to listen more meaningfully to accounts of IRS survivors. Without a critical evaluation of the underlying conditions of speech, the TRC cannot disturb settler denial and reveal the fiction of Canada as a noncolonial country.
