In the Summer 2001 issue of JBHE, we reported the rude reception that greeted conservative columnist Ann Coulter when she gave a presentation on the Confederate flag last spring at Cornell University. Before her visit to Cornell Coulter had written in her syndicated column that the Confederate flag "has nothing to do with race. It stands for a romantic image of a chivalric, honor-based culture that was driven down by the brute force of crass Yankee capitalism." Coulter went on to defend the slave economy of the South.
