Abstract It has long been noticed that George Lucas Star Wars hexalogy is to a high degree inuenced by medieval literature, especially by Arthurian romance. This is clearly visible in the concept of Jedi knights. However, there also exists an analogy between the Star Wars movies and Arthurian texts concerning narrative phenomena: Both the romances of Chrtien de Troyes or Hartmann von Aue and Episode IV (the rst Star Wars movie) create a rather inexible ctional world: It lacks profound historical processes, shows consistent values, and is crowded by rather schematic characters. When it comes to cyclicationand cyclication soon becomes an important issue both in Star Wars and in the Arthurian tradition, this inexibility proves to be a severe problem, as cyclication needs a dynamic structure per se. The different solutions provided by the Star Wars hexalogy and the Arthurian Vulgate cycle and their narratological implications are thoroughly discussed in this article.
