Charlotte Zolotow's contributions to children's literature are numerous. Born in Virginia in 1915, she was hired as an assistant to legendary editor Ursula Nordstrom at Harper & Row in the juvenile department in 1938. After her first book was published, in 1944, she continued in her role as a children's book editor, eventually leading to her own imprint. In 1998 the Cooperative Children's Book Center at the University of Wisconsin established an award in her name. Her more than 80 books have been illustrated by artists such as Maurice Sendak. Tana Hoban, H. A. Key, Garth Williams, and William Pene du Bois. Author Jean Craighead George says about her good friend,"There are many poets who write for children, but there is only one who reaches into their world and understands their young developing emotions-Charlotte Zolotow.... Her books seek out the child in the child."
