The year-end section that the late editor-in-chief started in 1990 has such distinguished alumnae as tv's Katie Couric, tennis' Martina Navratilova, Environmental Protection Agency adminstrator Carol Browner, anti-land-mines activist/Nobel Peace Prize winner (1997) Jody Williams, etc. Now, says, successor (since August 1998) Bonnie Fuller, it will be Ruth's turn, and she will be among the 1999 inductees to be fted at a November 11 reception in New York's Avery Fisher Hall that will accompany Glamour's December release. "It is a decision I was proud to make, and I am hoping that Ruth's family will be present." That is no guarantee, because Whitney's bitterness over the ending of her 31-year stint--and over Conde Nast president Steve Florio's hire of Cosmopolitan alumna Fuller--was almost everyday gossip until her June 4 death from the effects of Lou Gehrig's Disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Included was her request not to be honored last year.
