Katz and the cable: Actor-comic performing benefit for Newton TV

Like millions of people, Newton resident Jonathan Katz become famous after appearing on cable TV. Katz was a fairly obscure actor-comic for 10 years before Comedy Central began broadcasting the animated series he co-created, "Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist." The program has garnered an Emmy and become popular worldwide over the last four years.
But Katz is unique among the celebrities cable TV has created. He's one of the few that have also helped launch a public access television station.
In June 1992, before "Dr. Katz," the performer hosted "Reaching for the Stars," a two-hour talent show that was the first program broadcast live on NewTV, Newton's community access station. Katz remains so fond of NewTV that he'll do a special benefit for it Wednesday, 8 p.m., at the Emerson Majestic Theater in Boston.
