OSHKOSH, Wis. - Chuck Waterman doesn't believe in the superstition that carnivals should not play their hometown events. This was Calkins Midway's eighth year at the Winnebago County Fair. The show is based in Oshkosh.
"Yesterday was Friday the 13th, and we were way up. What's superstitious about that?" the owner/operator told AB in mid-August. Calkins had 20 rides and attractions and 30 games set up at the fair. The carnival has been in existence since 1966.
The season has been good, but a little hot, said Waterman. "We could be a little ahead of last year at this time, even though we were 30% down at the Brown County Fair in DePere due to the heat." DePere is a suburb of Green Bay
"Help has been OK. We have plenty, but they are younger, 18 and 19 years old. We could use two more CDL drivers. We are hiring independents. We have two guys who come in every week and pull [trailers]. We have six CDL drivers on board," he said.
