Australia is seeing mainly additions to existing theme parks, and some shuttling of attractions between different parks, in this relatively sparsely populated country.
"Australia's kind of a mature market; it's almost saturated," said Michael Jenkins, president of Dallas-based Leisure & Recreation Concepts. "It can only support so much development."
Dreamworld paid $5 million for Luna Park's Big Dipper roller coaster, which wasn't getting much use at the 83-year-old Sydney park because of noise complaints from local residents. Dreamworld, in Coomera, Queensland, is in the midst of a multi-million dollar expansion project over the next several years. This season, the park added The Dreamworld Studios, where the television series "Big Brother," a reality-based show, will tape.
