Metro Detroit's "deep discount" drugstore war will heat up in the fall.
Warren-based F&M Distributors Inc. plans three new stores, in Mt. Clemens, Taylor and East Detroit.
Meanwhile, a newcomer to the market --Phar-Mor Inc. -- has signed letters of intent to lease space in two Southfield and Livonia shopping malls, according to real-estate sources. The new Phar-Mor stores will open late this year or early in 1991, the sources said.
Heavyweight Phar-Mor carries more general merchandise and has larger stores than F&M. It's also roughly twice F&M's size in terms of sales and number of stores.
But last week, F&M President Frank Newman downplayed the competition between the two. "Basically, Phar-Mor is a K mart without apparel," Newman said.
