Dance Ontario's Dance Weekend. The dance service organization started this annual event in 1993 to increase public awareness about dance, particularly the orphan art of contemporary dance, which still attracts the smallest audience of all the fine arts. Twelve years later, this weekend dance celebration is a terrific audience builder. Dance Ontario's director, Rosslyn Jacob Edwards, has invited 24 companies from the GTA to participate. Dance styles range from ethnic, ballet and modern to hip hop. Audiences can come and go as they please, staying for one or more, or even all, of the dozen daily shows. The original choreography this year is by veteran Terrill Maguire (featuring retiring National Ballet ballerina Martine Lamy) and newcomer Malgorzata Nowacka. Jan. 22 and 23. PWYC ($5 minimum).
