Although Jack Smith created the idea of a superstore for Herman's World of Sporting Goods, he left that company when its foreign parent wouldn't finance expansion of his brainchild.
Now Mr. Smith, Herman's former chief operating officer, has his old company in sight as he brings Sports Authority Inc. and its superstores to the New York area.
"This will probably be our biggest market," he says. "Our plan is to do probably 15 to 20 stores."
Less than 16 months after it introduced its first local megastore in Wayne, N.J., Sports Authority has opened six stores in northern New Jersey and Long Island. It plans at least four more outlets in Westchester County and Long Island by year end.
